Penta Games
-
Advisor: Heather Armstrong
Meeting Times: Varies
Description: Penta Games is comprised of math games—surprisingly, five math games. It is a state-wide day that takes place at different sites around Oregon. In the southern region, we usually have 10 schools attending. We train for game day before school during the month of April to learn the rules. The competition itself is held at a local host school at the end of April where we spend the day as mathletes. The team is restricted to 12 students who are enrolled 7th and 8th grades in pre-algebra or higher who are nominated by the Math department.
Savenger Hunt
-
Advisor: Sandra Tringolo
Meeting Times: Research days for the 2019 competition are November 12th, 13th, and 14th, and adjudication is November 18th at Southern Oregon University.
Description: Scavenger Hunt is a search game. We might search through printed materials, internet sites, or the junk in the basement. A team of students who are recommended by staff spend three school days in the library doing their research. Then on a fourth day, we go to SOU to meet with the other teams and defend our answers. It is the most demanding and varied of all the academic competitions.
